Millwall face Spanish opposition in pre-season Den clash
Millwall will play Spanish Segunda Division club RCD Mallorca at The Den on Friday 1st August (kick-off 7.45pm) in what is likely to be Ian Holloway's final senior pre-season fixture before The Lions' Championship curtain raiser against Leeds United on 9th August.
Mallorca are based in Palma in the Balearic Islands and have enjoyed some notable successes in their 98 year history, reaching the UEFA Cup Final in 1999 and winning the Copa del Rey in 2003.
As recently as 2011, Mallorca qualified for the Europa League, having finished fifth in La Liga, but were unable to play in the competition due to financial problems.
Those financial issues contributed to the club's relegation in 2013 after 16 consecutive seasons in the top flight, and RCD are now rebuilding for the future and aiming for a return to La Liga in 2014/15.
Millwall have a link with RCD through former Lions and Northern Ireland striker Gerry Armstrong, who signed for the Spanish club shortly after scoring a World Cup winner for his country against the hosts, Spain in 1982.
Armstrong went on to score 13 goals in 55 appearances for Mallorca between 1983-85, before a brief loan spell at the old Den in 1987 where he played seven times.
This will be the second consecutive summer in which The Lions have faced Spanish opposition in pre-season, having beaten Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Paul Robinson's testimonial last July.
Ticket prices: £10 adults, £5 U16s.
