Webster looks ahead to Leeds opener

7 August 2014

Defender not looking beyond earning a starting spot this weekend

Summer signing Byron Webster expects Leeds United to provide a tough test for The Lions as the new Championship season kicks-off at The Den on Saturday (3pm).

The defender, born in Yorkshire, has impressed in his pre-season outings for Ian Holloway's side and remains fully focused on earning a starting position against The Whites.

"Leeds are my hometown club," Webster says in Saturday's new-look edition of matchday programme The Lion.

"Some of the things happening off the pitch there have been well documented but in the first game of the season every player is fighting to impress their manager and keep their place, so it's going to be a tough match.

"Whoever we played, though, would've made for a massive game on the opening day."

Webster added: "Personally I'm not looking too far ahead. My first aim is to get in the team, then it's to keep my place. The quicker I can do that the happier I will be.

"But if the team is doing well and I'm in the background not starting matches I will have to keep working hard to try and grab a place."
