Lions in a late, late show

14 October 2013

Kris clinches cubs victory

Millwall U18s 2 Leeds Utd U18s 1

Kris Twardek grabbed a late winner as Millwall fought back from a 1-0 deficit to secure an excellent victory against Leeds United.

The visitors had taken the lead early in the second half through midfielder Kalvin Phillips only for an own goal by visiting defender Liam Bennett to haul The Lions level before Twardek clinched a dramatic late winner.

The first half was dominated by Millwall, who despite enjoying the majority of possession and creating the better chances, were unable to make the breakthrough.

Alfie Pavey saw his goalbound shot blocked on the line and strike partner Jamie Philpot then miscued his shot under pressure from just six yards out in a bright opening spell by the home side.

Philpot was inches away from connecting with a super Pavey pass, being denied only by the quick reactions of Leeds keeper Brad Onion who raced out to intercept the danger.

In the 23rd minute midfielder Ben Thompson’s free-kick from 20 yards smacked the upright as Millwall continued to press for the opening goal.

It seemed that The Lions pressure had paid off on the half-hour when, following a free-kick into the danger area by full-back Kyron Farrell, the ball was bundled into the Leeds net, only to be disallowed for offside.

The latter stages of the first period saw the visitors come more into the game but they found The Lions defence difficult to break down. Infact Leeds only noteworthy effort of the first 45 minutes was when a misdirected cross sailed over and struck the top of the bar.

Millwall had the ball in the back of the Leeds net moments into the second-half but unfortunately for a second time the goal was ruled out after the referee adjudged that the Leeds keeper had been fouled.

Just nine minutes after the restart, and totally against the run of play, the visitors took the lead courtesy of Phillips' perfectly executed 20-yard free-kick that gave goalkeeper Tom Beadle no chance.

The Lions refused to let their heads drop and within 10 minutes were on level terms thanks to an own goal when a teasing delivery into the Leeds box by Farrell was glanced past his own keeper by Leeds central defender Bennett.

Millwall pushed forward with increasing intensity looking for a winner and that perseverence finally paid off when, with just three minutes remaining, Twardek sent a looping header from Farrell's delivery over the keeper and into the back of the net to secure a thoroughly deserved win.

Team: Beadle, Webb, Farrell, Danquae (Guinchard, 64mins), Nelson, Wood, Rylah (Byron, 64mins), Thompson, Pavey, Philpot, Twardek. Subs not used: Parr, Goodman, Dexter.
