A big test

22 November 2013

Lomas looks ahead to Barnsley encounter

Millwall boss Steve Lomas says Saturday's game against Barnsley is the start of a testing period for his side with nine League games coming up in quick succession.

The Lions have gone six games without a win but haven't lost in four at The Den, and Lomas, speaking in his programme notes in Saturday's 100-page matchday programme, believes his men will have to be at their best to secure a victory against David Flitcroft's Tykes.

"There's no getting away from the fact that at this relatively early stage of the season this is an important game for us," he says.

"Our home form of late has been significantly better having stopped the rot here at The Den, and after a couple of victories we have picked up good points against top sides in QPR and Burnley.

"Now the onus is on us to turn draws into victories, starting against a Barnsley side fighting for their lives nearer the foot of the table.

"We must start the game with intensity both in and out of possession which immediately gets the crowd behind us, and then if necessary we may have to be patient until the game begins to open out."

After Saturday's match, The Lions travel to Leicester City next weekend before the start of a busy December, and Lomas has called on everyone in his squad to play their part over the coming weeks.

"Our squad will be tested to the full with nine games coming up. The are many important ones to come and we want everyone fully fit and firing when they come into the team. It is very much a squad game and it is up to the players in possession of the shirts to stake their claim to hang onto them."
