Millwall Street Pro

30 May 2013

Free weekly Friday night tournaments

The Millwall Community Scheme are delighted to offer young people aged 12-18 free weekly Friday night football tournaments and coaching sessions in the eight community council areas within the London Borough of Southwark.
The 'Millwall Street Pro' programme is being supported by the Southwark Youth Service who will encourage young people to attend any of the eight venues and also to help support people back into education or employment.
The programme aims to target some of the most challenging and disadvantaged communities which suffer from higher rates of crime and anti-social behaviour, and it is hoped that the  sessions will engage over 500 young people on each week.
During half-terms, in addition to the regular weekly Friday night slots, all eight community council areas will be invited to a neutral venue to take part in organised football tournaments. This will be delivered in a safe environment supported by the British Transport and Metropolitan Police forces.
Millwall Street Pro will also provide short educational and awareness workshops to make young people aware of the dangers of gangs, gun and knife crime, alcohol and drug misuse, plus much more.
The programme is also the perfect platform for volunteers seeking valuable coaching experience. It encourages people to assist coaches with warm-ups, drills, equipment management and risk assessment tasks. Once these individuals have shown a good level of commitment to their volunteering by being punctual showing desire and enthusiasm to coaching, they will be put forward to attend the FA Level 1 certificate in football coaching.
