Millwall £5,000 boosts Judicial Review fund
Pat Sikorski from the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign thanked Millwall fans and the football club for their support in raising £12,000 of the £20,000 needed for the forthcoming Judicial Review.
He said: "Millwall's support has been invaluable, as has that of the fans and local people who have donated their own money towards our target."
Lions CEO Andy Ambler handed over a cheque for £5,000 to the Campaign, after the club pledged to match the first £5,000 raised by the public, saying: "I really hope the Judicial Review is successful and that Lewisham Hospital can continue to provide the excellent service to our local community that we have all benefited from down the years."
Explaining the need for the £20,000 and the ongoing process, Pat Sikorski added: "The Judicial Review on 2nd, 3rd and 4th July will examine whether the Minister for health, Jeremy Hunt, has exceeded his powers in deciding to close the A&E unit and children's services at Lewisham.
If the judge finds that he has, hopefully he will be ordered to conduct a proper review of the hospital, over two or three years, not the 30 days of the original one, taking into account the difficulty of getting to other A&E departments, travelling times, clinical needs and so on.
The £20,000 is needed to pursue the Judicial Review. If we win, the money will be used to buy items of hospital equipment and support other charities.
The pressing need now, though, is to raise the additional £8,000 we require."
