Lions go down at Welling

10 July 2013

Youthful Millwall side beaten 4-2

A Millwall Xl made up of mostly of youth players and trialists succumbed to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Welling United in The Lions' first pre-season outing of the summer.

Goals from Charlie Penny and Ben Thompson were not enough for The Lions as former Millwall forward Kiernan Hughes-Mason, Malik Ouani, Doug Bergqvist and Fraser Franks each got on the scoresheet for The Wings.

The home side started the brighter at Park View Road and were ahead within 20 minutes. Hughes-Mason finished well from six-yards and although the linesman raised his flag, the decision was overruled by the referee and the goal stood.

Welling doubled their lead soon after; winger Ouani driving infield before firing an effort which arrowed past Denzil Gerrard, a trialist in goal for Millwall.

The deficit was halved when substitute Charlie Penny, who recently signed a professional contract at The Den, latched onto trialist Ben Reeves' clever through-ball before rounding Welling keeper Sam Mott and knocking the ball into the unguarded net.

In contrast to the opening half, The Lions began the second period brightly, keeping possession well and restricting Welling to few efforts on goal.

Against the run of play, however, the hosts made it 3-1 when Bergqvist headed home from a corner. That lead was increased further just minutes later when Franks hammered home a well-worked free-kick to the delight of Welling faithful.

That wasn't to be the end of the scoring, however, as Lions substitute Alfie Pavey knocked Penny's free-kick into the path of Ben Thompson to finish from close range and make it 4-2.

Millwall are back in pre-season action at Crawley Town on Saturday with several first team members expected to feature.
