Whitter hits a hat-trick in romp

Prolific striker Emma Whitter hit a hat-trick to fire Millwall Lionesses to the top of the Women's Southern Premier League table with a 5-2 demolition of Colchester United Ladies.
Josie Elliot bagged a brace too as The Lionesses proved simply too hot for Colchester to handle on their way to securing the three points.
From the start Millwall were on top with their possession and quality in the final third decisive.
In a bright opening Ciara Sherwood, Elliot and Shauni Griffiths all went close whilst Whitter fired narrowly wide after breaking clear on goal after 19 minutes as Millwall had their opponents on the back foot.
However just 60 seconds later Whitter made no mistake when she received the ball outside the box and smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.
Whitter grabbed her - and Millwall's - second goal 10 minutes before the break, this time latching onto an expertly placed pass by Griffiths and slotting home in style.
The second half saw Millwall add further goals to their tally in double-quick time with Ellie Manning's skilful pass picking out Elliot for her first, before adding another to make it 4-0 with 55 minutes gone. On this occasion she met Whitter's cross from the right to send a powerful header past the visiting keeper.
Colchester reduced the arrears three minutes later , but their joy was short-lived as The Lionesses restored their four-goal cushion when Whitter fired home with great precision from a free-kick.
Millwall continued to press and pushed hard for more goals but a misplaced pass from Yardley on 80 minutes was picked up by a Colchester player who smartly chipped the ball home.
The introduction of Abigail Igbavboia, Fern Colepio and Dayna Chong added fresh impetus to the home attack with the three players really testing the Colchester back four.
However it was the visitors who nearly added the final goal of the game from a corner, but Millwall's defensive unit stood firm to make sure the back of he net was not disturbed.
