Lionesses continue winning start

The Millwall Lionesses kept up their impressive 100 per cent winning start to the season with a 2-0 win at Gillingham Ladies.
From the off, the visitors found themselves on the front foot and put a strong Gillingham side under intense pressure in the opening exchanges.
A 25-yard strike from Ciara Sherwood rattled the crossbar with mere seconds on the clock, before the Gills keeper had to be at her best to deny Ellie Manning's long distance drive.
It wasn't to be long, however, until the deadlock was broken. Emma Whitter, whose movement and speed was causing the Gillingham backline a headache, latched onto a clever pass from Ciara Sherwood to calmly lob the ball over the keeper to make it 1-0.
To their credit, the home side reacted well and came extremely close to finding an immediate equaliser.
Former Lionesses winger Lauren Phillips made herself enough space down the right flank to produce a stinging shot at goal which Frankie Gibbs tipped away superbly.
However, the hosts couldn't sustain a spell of pressure, and were made to pay in the 35th minute. A header by captain Dionne Lennon was handled by one by a Gills players on the line. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, which Abigail Igbavboia duly dispatched to give the Lionesses a comfortable lead.
The second-half began with a change; Fern Colepio replacing Alicia Ferguson for her Lionesses debut. None-the-less, the substitution didn't upset the pattern of the game as the visitors continued to control possession and threaten in attack. When The Gills made their way forward they were met by the ever-dependable Lionesses defence.
It wasn't to be the perfect day, however, as Whitter was sent off for an over-zealous challenge and verbal altercation with 10 minutes left to play.
Despite the advantage, Gillingham couldn't find a goal in reply as the Lionesses held on for another impressive victory.
Next up, the Lionesses face Gillingham Ladies again, this time in the Women's Premier League Cup.
Team: Gibbs, Mackie, Lennon, Grafton, Strugnell, Colepio (Ferguson, 45mins), Sherwood (Dawson, 89mins), Manning, Griffiths, Whitter, Igbavboia (Payne, 80mins).
