Youngsters lose out in thriller
Tobi Alabi put the visitors ahead with the first attack of the game. Aiden O’Brien went past two City defenders before seeing his shot parried by Lewis Carey. Alabi was quickest to react and forced the ball over the line.
Millwall's Under 21s found the net three times at Ashton Gate but still came away with nothing against table-topping Bristol City.
O’Brien once again was allowed to run at the City defence, this time he opted to pass the ball to Niall McManus whose powerful strike found the back of the net to double the visitors advantage.
City came close when Luke Dobie kept the ball well from three Millwall players before finding Kevin Krans, but his shot from 25-yards out sailed over the crossbar.
The home side pulled one back when Bobby Reid unleashed a thunderous left-footed drive that found the bottom corner with Steve Milldenhall rooted to the spot.
Minutes later Nathan Battersby’s cross found Reid at the back post, his header took a deflection before bouncing over the line to tie things up at 2-2.
After a slow start to the second half Millwall once again took the lead just after the hour mark. A poor City back pass was intercepted by the lively O’Brien, The striker was able to take the ball past Carey before squeezing his shot into the net from a tight angle.
City once again fought back, Tobi Ajala’s cross into a packed Millwall box found centre-back and ex-Lion Omar Beckles whose bullet header brought City back for the second time in the game. The Robins went into the lead for the first time in the 85th minute. Reid’s free kick found Beckles whose header bounced into the bottom corner.
City’s victory was secured when Ajala was able to run into the Lions’ box, his low cross found Tashan Dwyer who smashed the ball into an empty net.
