Millwall U18s 1 Barnet U18s 2
A very young Lions side made up largely of U16s put up a good show before slipping to a narrow defeat at the hands of Barnet on Saturday.
With one eye on Tuesday night's FA Youth Cup tie against Blackpool, coach Justin Skinner selected a number of U16s who gave their older opponents a really tough work-out.
The first half turned out to be one way traffic with The Lions piling on the pressure from the off.
Hammed Laval almost got on the scoresheet in the opening minute, but his effort from 10 yards was blocked on the goal line.
Laval had the ball in the back of the Barnet net moments later only to be adjudged offside whilst Jamie Philpot's 10th-minute effort was blocked by a Barnet defender following great work by Callum Thompson.
A fine run and cross by defender Tyron Farrell was a whisker away from being touched passed goalkeeper Barnes and in Millwall’s next attack a great ball into the danger zone by defender Callum Webb deserved better.
Goalkeeper Luke Bartlett was untroubled until the stroke of half-time when Barnet took the lead courtesy of Kamal's clinical finish from the penalty spot after a team-mate had been bundled over following the visitors first corner of the game.
The second period opened with Millwall once again in the ascendency but unable to find the back of the Barnet net. Midfielder Fred Onyedinma played in Thompson but his drive flew over the crossbar and minutes later striker Philpot watched his effort flash inches wide of the upright as The Lions pressed for a leveller.
The pressure finally paid off just before the hour-mark when Callum Thompson surged in from the right flank and beat the advancing keeper with a deftly chipped effort.
Unfortunately Millwall's celebrations were cut short and within 60 seconds the visitors were back in front through James Charles who cut in from the right and struck a crisp shot passed keeper Bartlett.
The Lions were desperately close to equalising on 70 minutes when a fine freekick by Webb from just outside the Barnet area struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety.
For all their late pressure, Millwall were unable to claw back a goal for a second time and Barnet held firm to secure victory.Bartlett, Webb, Farrell, Onyedinma, Nelson, Wood, C.Thompson, B.Thompson (Thunguivat, 75mins), Philpot, Danquae (Bryon, 80mins), Laval (Rylah, 80 mins).
