Under 23s suffer first defeat

A single-goal loss for The Lions...

6 October 2020

Ten-man Millwall Under 23s were handed a first Professional Development League defeat of the season on Tuesday afternoon as Charlton Athletic were 1-0 winners at Calmont Road.

Josh Davison's fourth-minute strike was enough to win the game for The Addicks, whilst Millwall had Reuben Duncan sent off in the second-half.

Kevin Nugent opted to field a 5-2-3 formation against Jason Euell's side, with Jiri Skalak and Junior Tiensia operating as wing-backs alongside a central defensive team of Rob Strachan, Hayden Muller and Besart Topalloj. Dan Moss and Duncan occupied the midfield positions, whilst Sean O'Brien and Tyler Burey partnered George Alexander in attack.

The first action of the game came on four minutes - and it produced the only goal of the game. After a ball forward saw Davison and Strachan chase, the striker's slide and poke towards the net saw the ball creep into the far corner.

The first-half was devoid of clear-cut chances from there, with Topalloj's header, which went wide after a Skalak corner, proving to be the only opportunity of note, but O'Brien's wide attempt early into the second-half sparked the game into life in front of goal.

With 49 minutes on the clock, Ryan Sandford produced a magnificent double save from goalscorer Davison and Lucas Ness to prevent Charlton from taking a further lead, with the stopper then pulling off another top draw save a few minutes later as he tipped an Albie Morgan effort around the post.

On 65 minutes, though, came a flashpoint as Duncan was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Charlie Barker.

Despite their man disadvantage, there was a chance for The Lions to equalise eight minutes later, but as the ball broke to the prolific Alexander in the penalty area, his strike was well stopped by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

At the other end, Morgan rattled the woodwork with 10 minutes remaining, but no further goals were scored.

Next up for Nugent's side is a trip to Coventry City on 16th October.
