Young Lions dominate and defeat Crewe

Our report from Calmont Road...

10 November 2020

Millwall's Under 23s secured a 1-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra in the Professional Development League at Calmont Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Dan Moss struck the winning goal with 12 minutes remaining in an afternoon which saw Kevin Nugent's side overwhelmingly dominant against the visitors.

The pattern of the game was evident from the early stages, as The Lions spent their time camped in the Crewe half, but were unable to find a way to goal. After probing for the opening 15 minutes, the first chance came as Alex Mitchell met Sean O'Brien's corner-kick, but he headed over the crossbar.

The attack versus defence nature of the match continued as the half-hour mark came and went, but due to the sheer number of Alex players in their own penalty area, finding a way to goal was proving an issue - Jayden Davis trying his luck from distance on 30 minutes, but again, the wrong side of the crossbar was found.

Moss could have given The Lions the lead five minutes later, but his left-footed half-volley crept just over. Centre-half Rob Strachan - sitting on the edge of the centre-cirle, such was the home side's dominance - then tried his luck from just outside the penalty area, but the ball was deflected wide.

Moss, Billy Mitchell and Davis all continued to plug away with no reward, and despite Ryan Sandford touching the ball of any note for the first time in the 58th minute, Millwall continued to come forward.

Substitute Abdul Abdulmalik's effort was saved, and after Moss had a header cleared off the line in the 78th minute, it appeared as if Millwall's assertive efforts were going to be in vain. However, just seconds later, Abdulmalik's cross was met by Moss inside the area for the right-back to score the only goal of the game.

The Lions continued to pile forward despite finally breaking the deadlock, and they could have had another on 83 minutes, but the lively Abdulmalik's shot was stopped by the base of the post.

Next up for Millwall's Under 23s is a home game against Wigan Athletic next Tuesday.

Millwall: Sandford, Moss, Topalloj (Abdulmalik 63'), Strachan, A. Mitchell, Muller, Skeffington, B. Mitchell, Alexander, O'Brien, Davis (Boateng 73'). Subs not used: Gillmore, Allen, Penney.

Scorer: Moss 78'

Referee: Tom Ellsmore
