Young Lions secure first win on the board

Front two net goal apiece in 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest

26 August 2019

Millwall Under 23s secured their maiden victory of the season at the third attempt on Monday afternoon, with a 2-0 success over Nottingham Forest at Calmont Road.

Harvey Bradbury's neat finish opened the scoring half an hour into the game, before George Alexander's penalty at the death sealed the points.

Kevin Nugent opted for a youthful side, with U23 regulars Jesse Debrah, Tyler Burey and Alexander all taking their place in the starting XI.

Despite Forest shading the early possession, Millwall grew into the first half and dominated large spells, Alexander sending a looping header inches over the crossbar from Debrah's flick.

Reuben Duncan's free-kick was then blocked as The Lions increased the pressure, before a well-measured long pass from the left-hand side found Bradbury to get in behind and roll the ball beyond Forest 'keeper Jordan Wright.

Namesake and opposite number Joe Wright in the Millwall goal was shortly after forced into a fine reaction save to deny midfield man Jake Taylor from the edge of the area, before Alexander saw a sight of goal snuffed out by the Forest defence as the teams went in at a 1-0 scoreline at the break.

The visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure after the interval in the demanding hot conditions, Yassine En-Neyah going close with Wright denying him well. Captain Danny Preston then saw a shot blocked by a number of Lions bodies, before Alex Mighten spurned Forest's biggest chance as he curled a shot off the outside of the post.

Tyler Burey caused problems as ever out wide for Nugent's youngsters, sending a ball in from the left for Alexander which the striker glanced just wide of the mark. Substitute Jay Barton then saw a low drive inside the area kept out by Forest's Wright, before Burey was brought down in the area in second-half injury-time.

Alexander was on hand to wrap up the three points, steering an emphatic finish into the top-left corner of the net.
