Young Lions secure comfortable Den victory

Nugent's side dominate in SE16

2 September 2018

Mason Saunders-Henry struck a brace as Millwall's U23 side secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at The Den on Sunday.

The winger - impressive throughout - opened the scoring early on before finding the net with a penalty 10 minutes later. Jesse Debrah headed home a third during the second-half.

The young Lions started on the front foot and were rewarded for their early pressure when Kevin Nugent's side took the lead inside four minutes. The ball was worked towards the left for Lewis White, who cut inside before seeing a shot saved by Bolton keeper James Apinsall, only for the ball to fall at the feet of Saunders-Henry who tapped home from close range.

The away side almost drew level five minutes later when an effort from range hit the woodwork before keeper David Martin produced a superb save as Bolton looked to find the net on the rebound.

But they were made to pay for missing that opportunity as The Lions made it two after just 14 minutes. James Brown, featuring after he was recalled from a loan at Livingston earlier in the week, dribbled his way down the right flank before being fouled inside the box and Saunders-Henry duly slotted home his and his team's second from the penalty spot.

Bolton began to see more of the ball as they searched for a way back into the game but they struggled to create clear openings; Dennis Politic's strike from outside the box the only real highlight for the visitors as the game passed the half-hour mark.

It should have been 3-0 shortly before the interval when the confident Saunders-Henry released White, who lifted his effort over the keeper only to see it crash against the crossbar.

The second-half began as the first had with The Lions well on top of proceedings and their dominance told once more on the hour mark when Debrah headed home from a Joe Wicks free-kick to make it three for the hosts.

Nugent's men afforded the away side more time in possession with the three-goal advantage secured but Bolton were unable to trouble an impressive Millwall defence who deserved their clean sheet.

Millwall U23s: Martin, Brown, McNamara, Karacan (M.Parker, 80'), Debrah, Stojsavjlevic, Harvey, Wicks, Olaofe (Davison, 65'), White (F.Parker, 56'), Saunders-Henry. Subs not used: Sandford, Hanson
