Young Lions sign off season with clean sheet at Calmont Road

Under 23s play out goalless draw with Sheffield United to finish 2018/19

15 April 2019

Millwall's Under 23s finished an encouraging 2018/19 season in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon following a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United at Calmont Road.

The stalemate brings the curtain down on a season in which Kevin Nugent's squad of young professionals and scholars have shown a lot of positive progress, claiming the best defensive record in the Southern Section of the League.

An even opening to the game saw both sides look to gather a feel for the ball, with Lewis White's low drive inside the area just drifting wide in The Lions' best early opportunity. Jesse Debrah was on hand at the other end to stop Blades skipper Oliver Greaves, following a winding run towards goal.

Midfielder Zac Brunt also passed up a good opportunity for the visitors when he dragged a first-time shot wide of the mark just inside the Millwall box, as a goalless first half came to a close.

The Lions began the second half in the ascendancy, and saw a lot of the ball down the left flank with Junior Tiensia and White. Fred Onyedinma also looked tricky throughout the afternoon, forcing a number of potential openings with his excellent close control and footwork.

It was Onyedinma who then took on the next two opportunities, firing just wide after receiving the ball from George Alexander following a positive move, before testing Marcus Dewhurst in the Sheffield United goal with a good strike.

Dewhurst then denied substitute Reuben Duncan from a tight angle, before Jake Young curled the visitors' best chance inches wide of Tom King's goal from 15 yards out.

As the final seconds approached, Billy Mitchell had the chance to crown the Under 23 side's season with late glory, but for a quite fantastic Dewhurst save from close range as the midfielder connected well with the shot.

A strong end to the contest was unable to produce a winner for Nugent's team, but it remains a campaign to be proud of. Millwall sit fourth in the Southern Section after the point, though this may change with some sides yet to complete their League fixtures.

Millwall: King, Hanson, Debrah (c), Topalloj (Stojsavljevic 78'), Tiensia; Onyedinma, Mitchell, Skeffington, White; Saunders-Henry (Duncan 59'), Alexander. Subs not used: Wright, Muller, Davies.
