Trio preview FA Youth Cup tie

Young Lions meet Fleetwood at The Den

8 January 2020

Millwall's Under 18s take on Fleetwood Town in the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening (kick-off 7pm).

The tie at The Den will see Larry McAvoy and Chris Perry's in-form Lions take on The Cod Army for a place in Round Five, with tickets available at the Ticket Office up until kick-off, priced at £5 adults and £1 under 16s.

Hayden Muller is captain of Millwall's Under 18 side, and the centre-back cannot wait for the tie to get underway.

"Preparations have gone really well - we managed to beat the team second in our League [Watford] 5-3 at the weekend in a really tough game," he told millwallfc.co.uk. "We've been in training this week and we'll be preparing today [Tuesday] with some set-pieces.

"The Den is a really good place to play, and for the younger lads, we're trying to bring their confidence up to get through it and make sure they perform well."

"We're really looking forward to it," added McAvoy and Perry. "This is the furthest we've been since we took the job. It's nice to have a home game and for the players to play at The Den. It will be great for the players to have a bit of support.

"Out of possession, you can expect a team that will press the ball. They'll want to win the ball back quickly and work hard as a team. In possession, they'll look to play forwards, and with quality. We have players on the ball who can travel with it and dominate one-v-one's.

"We can mix our game up really well, but we've got pace and can get in behind, too."

Full updates will follow from The Den on The Lions' official Twitter account @MilllwallFC, whilst a report and reaction from SE16 will be on millwallfc.co.uk after the game's completion.

Heroic Lions advance in FA Youth Cup

Our take on the action

8 January 2020

Millwall's 10-man Under 18s produced a fantastic second-half performance to dump Fleetwood Town out of the FA Youth Cup at The Den on Wednesday evening, winning 3-1.

Kian Makepeace opened the scoring for Fleetwood from the penalty spot, but three unanswered strikes from Alex Mitchell, Abdul Abdulmalik and Sean O'Brien secured the victory for Millwall, who had Chibuike Ezennolim sent off with the score at 1-1.

Millwall started slowly, with the visitors on top, and with just four minutes played Shayden Morris flashed an attempt across goal, but it went wide.

Five minutes later, however, The Cod Army were in front from the penalty spot as, after Leighton Fanshawe brought down Carl Johnston inside the area, Kian Makepeace sent the stopper the wrong way to open the scoring.

Fleetwood continued to pressure after that, with The Lions finally starting to come to life around the midway point - Sean O'Brien's 34th-minute free-kick nearly caught out Scott Pengelly, but the stopper clawed the ball away from danger.

The second-half saw the game - and especially Millwall - come to life.

Mitchell headed The Lions level on 52 minutes from a corner-kick, but Ezennolim received his marching orders, just a minute after being booked, for a high challenge, three minutes later.

That seemed to only spur Millwall on, though, as good work from Nana Boateng on the right-hand side saw the winger cut the ball back for Abdulmalik to slide home the home side's second of the evening and nudge the 10-man Lions in front.

They were a couple of hairy moments for Larry McAvoy and Chris Perry's side as the visitors first smacked the crossbar, before substitute Jamie Cooke chased down a Fanshawe clearance only to see the ball fizz over the crossbar, but the tie was put to bed four minutes from time as O'Brien blasted a free-kick home.

The referee then called time on a heroic second-half performance for Millwall and The Lions took their place in Round Five.
