In January 2003, a prolonged cold spell enveloped South London and laid an
 unblemished blanket of snow over the hallowed turf of The Den. And for a few,
 brief days the trampled earth assumed a serene and almost ghost like
 appearance, more suited to the muted shuffle of snowshoes than the urgent
 stomping of studded leather.
