Millwall res. 0 Gillingham res. 3

Posted on: Wed 21 Oct 2009

Millwall reserves took on Gillingham at Dartford's Princes Park on Tuesday night looking for their first totesport.com Combination win of the campaign.
Indeed, Richard Shaw's men had yet to register a goal, and that remained the case at the final whistle.
The first chance of the night fell to Gillingham after two minutes with Lions keeper John Sullivan forced to make a smart save to deny Josh Sergeant.
Next it was the turn of Luke Rooney to test Sullivan with the keeper turning his angled drive over the bar.
Millwall's first clear-cut chance arrived just before the half-hour when Kiernan Hughes-Mason found himself in the clear but lobbed just wide with the keeper advancing.
Five minutes before the break Jason Price worked his way clear on the right and crossed for Dave Martin to head into the arms of Alan Julian. Gills immediately broke down the other end and Luke Rooney stung Sullivan's palms once again.
Martin was next try his luck, fizzing a 20 yarder just over following a short free-kick. Luis Cumbers replied in kind for Gills from a similar distance as the play flowed from one end to the other before the half-time whistle blew.
Straight after the break Cumbers should have opened the scoring for the visitors, but his lob sailed harmlessly over.
It was a brief respite for The Lions though as trialist Gabriel Odunaike netted from close range from Miller's low cross.
Then, after Sullivan had denied Rooney with a fingertip save, Miller headed the second from Palmer's corner.
Lewis Grabban and Price combined to set-up Martin with a chance to reduce the arrears but the winger blazed hit right foot attempt wide.
Grabban then combined well with Marcus Bignot before shooting narrowly off target.
Millwall continued to press forward looking for a consolation goal, but after Hughes-Mason had been denied by a fine save from Julian, Gills broke and Rooney fed sub Charlie Stimson who fired home Gills third to put the result beyond doubt.
