Carling Cup third round draw....

Posted on: Fri 17 Sep 2010

Millwall have been drawn at home to Ipswich Town following Saturday's Carling Cup Third Round draw.
The Lions last met Ipswich in the Cup competition in September 2000 when, in an incredible game at Portman Road, Millwall - under the charge of caretaker boss Ray Harford - were beaten 5-0 having won the first leg 2-0 at The Den.
Without the ineligible Sam Parkin up front, Millwall suffered the first of a series of blows after 13 minutes when Neil Harris hobbled off with a thigh injury, leaving a less than fit Paul Ifill and Kevin Braniff up front. Ifill was then replaced before the half-hour mark by Sean Dyche.
Then on 28 minutes, Joe Dolan, who had already been booked by Andy Hall was sent off for a challenge on Martjin Reuser. Although replays showed that Big Joe had clearly made contact with the ball - and not the player - referee Hall showed a red card.
Tony Warner then saved the resulting penalty from Jim Magilton.
The Lions held firm at 0-0 with 73 minutes gone but then Steven Reid became the second Millwall man to be shown a harsh red card.
David Johnson scored almost immediately to reduce the deficit and then Titus Bramble popped up with two minutes remaining to force extra time.
Having already used all three subs at this stage, with sub Braniff being replaced by Leki Odunsi through injury, Millwall were further hindered when Ifill hobbled off injured leaving just eight players on the pitch.
Tim Cahill was then forced to spend much of extra time sitting on the pitch by the sideline injured, but was not allowed to leave the field of play because it would have left just seven Millwall players and forced an abandonment by referee Andy Hall.
Millwall's Carling Cup Third Round tie at home to Roy Keane's charges will be played week commencing Monday 20th September.
The Third Round draw in full is as follows:
Brentford v Everton
Portsmouth v Leicester City
Stoke City v Fulham
Chelsea v Newcastle United
Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers
Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal
Millwall v Ipswich Town
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Notts County
Burnley v Bolton Wanderers
Birmingham City v Milton Keynes Dons
Liverpool v Northampton Town
Scunthorpe United v Manchester United
West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City
Sunderland v West Ham United
Peterborough United v Swansea City
Wigan Athletic v Preston North End
All ties will take place during the week commencing September 20th.
