Millwall U18s 1 QPR U18s 1
Last Saturday Scott Fitzgerald's U18s entertained QPR in a thrilling encounter at the Bromley training ground where honours ended up even after a 1-1 draw.
The game got off to a very lively start and The Lions could have opened the scoring when first Omar Beckles and then fellow defender Chris Hegarty headed fractionally wide of the Rangers goal from free-kicks.
It took until the 28th minute for the Rangers to go close. Fortunately Hegarty was on hand with a fine headed clearance following a dangerous inswinging corner.
On the half hour it was midfielder Hassan Janneh who almost put The Lions ahead. Connor McLaren fed the ball to Connor French on the right and his cross was met by Janneh whose volley from 18 yards was only just pushed away by goalkeeper Joe Wright for a corner.
By this time the home side were seeing more of the ball and pressing dangerously and it was no surprise when they made the breakthrough in the 35th minute thanks to some close passing play around the Rangers box.
McLaren played the ball to John Marquis on the right and he threaded a pass to French. He, in turn, played the ball through to the onrushing Jake Gallagher who calmly picked his spot past keeper Wright from 10 yards.
In Millwall's next attack Gallagher almost doubled his tally following a pass into his path from Marquis, but this time keeper Wright was on hand to push the ball away.
In the second period early chances fell Millwall's way as Marquis scuffed his shot following a short corner from Jimmy Rogers, and Kiernan Hughes-Mason failed to connect properly in a goal scoring position following a short pass from Marquis.
It was evident that midway through the second period the visitors were gaining a foothold in the game and equalling the amount of possession as The Lions.
However in the 77th minute it took a highly debatable penalty decision by the referee for the visitors to draw level. McLaren was adjudged to have committed the foul and Danny Fernandez stepped up to fire the ball past goalkeeper Drummond.
The Lions rallied following this setback and late action saw Marquis try an acrobatic overhead effort which went only just wide.
Millwall did in fact get the ball in the back of the QPR net two minutes from time following a free-kick into the area, but this was ruled out for offside.
