Game On
Millwall Football Club are pleased to confirm that we will play Middlesbrough at The Den on Saturday 1st August in a Benefit Match for Richard Sadlier (kick-off 3pm).
Republic of Ireland striker Sads was sadly forced to cut short a promising career through injury at the age of just 24, with many convinced he would have gone on to play at the highest level.
Richard commented: "It has been almost six years now since I retired, so I am delighted we have finally made this happen. I can't wait for the chance to play once again at The Den and have the opportunity to finally show my appreciation to everyone connected with Millwall, and to say a final farewell.
I have so many people to thank for making this possible, but I'd like to say how grateful I am to both Millwall and Middlesbrough for agreeing to play the game, and particularly to Jeff Burnige, chairman of my committee, without whom this game would not have come about."
The Lions last faced Boro here back in February 1995 when the sides played out a 0-0 draw in the old First Division. Subsequently, the two sets of fans have built up something of a rapport in support of former Millwall and Middlesbrough favourite Colin Cooper following the tragic death of his son Finlay. Coops is now first team coach at the Riverside Stadium these days and will be assured of a big welcome when he returns to SE16.
