Kenny Jackett has identified the opening 10 games of the season as essential if The Lions are to enjoy a successful campaign.
It's five years since Millwall won an opening day fixture, and in the last two years especially, early season hopes have been quickly dashed following poor starts.
"The start is massive - and my only focus at this stage is the first 10 games of the season," said Kenny.
"I believe in targeting games in small batches. Once we can come through those with points on the board we can re-assess and take a look at our situation before we move on.
I am not going to say a points total for those games - other teams like to talk about 20 points after 10 games, but it should be more about whether we are in touch and whether the performances are there.
We need commitment and to be fitter and quicker than our opponents.
It is important to keep these things going, which makes our League Cup game against Northampton important.
You need to keep a momentum going - you can't set off like a bat out of hell at Oldham and then suddenly put the brakes on and start again the following Saturday.
A good start is essential - it will make everyone believe - and that's what we will be looking to do."
