Huddersfield Town 1 Millwall 0
Luke Beckett's 29th minute penalty condemned Millwall to a third successive away defeat at a foggy Galphram Stadium.
It was a night of bitterly cold weather - and an equal measure of disappointment - as The Lions huffed and puffed, but could not find a way to improve on the eight goals scored on their travels this season.
Kenny Jackett's men paid a heavy price for not taking advantage of any one of a number of chances when the score was still goalless.
Millwall had a great opportunity to take the lead with just 34 seconds on the clock when Lewis Grabban worked an opening on the right and delivered an inviting cross for Gary Alexander. But the striker's firm header was held at full stretch by home keeper Matt Glennon.
Town's Chris Brandon had Lions stopper Rhys Evans scurrying across his goal on seven minutes, but the midfielder's 22-yarder flashed wide of the post.
The play swung straight up the other end with Ahmet Brkovic's precision pass finding Alexander. The latter showed great strength to fend off Robert Page's challenge before letting fly with a left-foot effort that flew a foot over.
On the quarter hour the visitors again produced another good move. This time Simpson's cross-field pass picked out Brkovic on the right. The diminutive midfielder delivered a perfect cross that Grabban simply had to tuck home from three yards. Unfortunately he failed to control the ball enabling the grateful Glennon to gather at the striker's feet.
Huddersfield came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes later when Michael Collins' header from Phil Jevons corner was cleared off the line by Marc Laird.
The home side edged ahead after 29 minutes when Zak Whitbread stumbled over under pressure from Beckett, and was adjudged to have clipped the striker's heels with a trailing leg.
Beckett picked himself up, dusted himself down and fired the resulting penalty just past the outstretched hands of Evans.
That proved to be Town's only shot on target in the first 45 minutes, and it was The Lions who could have levelled nine minutes before the break when Dave Brammer slid the ball through to Brkovic whose first-time shot on the turn was held at the second attempt by Glennon.
Referee Webster replaced the white ball with an orange one at the break and Evans was lucky not to be picking it out of the net seconds after the restart. The unmarked Andy Holdsworth really should have increased Huddersfield's lead, but contrived to head Collins'cross over from five yards.
The Lions looked decidedly ill at ease in the early part of the second half and boss Jackett responded by introducing Ali Fuseini for Brammer.
But as hard as they tried to create any clear openings, and despite enjoying most of the possession, Millwall just could not find that vital killer touch in front of goal.
The closest they came to grabbing an equaliser was 10 minutes from time when a cross from Grabban curled tantalisingly away from the boot of the onrushing Brkovic.
