Loan signings Ahmet Brkovic and Will Hoskins were on target as Millwall edged past Bournemouth to book their place in the FA Cup Third Round.
Victory was just about deserved by Kenny Jackett's side, who may not have produced their best footballing performance, but could not be faulted for a lack of effort.
In dreadful wet and windy conditions, this was never going to be a game for the purists, and so it proved with neither side really getting into their stride in a poor opening half.
On the rare occasions the ball was played into the danger zone, all too often the final delivery from both teams lacked accuracy and penetration.
Will Hoskins was Millwall's liveliest player and twice his tricky footwork created openings; firstly with a hooked effort that dipped wide and then a fierce 16-yard drive that flew over the bar.
A long 25th-minute upfield punt from Zak Whitbread was headed clear by Cherries keeper Gareth Stewart and Neil Harris' follow-up shot was blocked as The Lions threatened briefly.
But it wasn't until a tactical change after the break that Millwall finally began to play with more urgency and bite.
Zoom Bakayogo was replaced by debutant Ross Gaynor, with Marcus Bignot switching to the left-back berth and Danny Senda slotting in at right-back.
And within five minutes of the restart the move paid off when Neil Harris produced a great bit of skill on the right, swung over an inviting cross that Brkovic powerfully headed home.
Millwall doubled their advantage on 54 minutes when the busy Brkovic took advantage of a misunderstanding between two Cherries players on the halfway line. He sprinted forward and slipped a fine ball through to Hoskins, whose stinging shot was too powerful for keeper Gareth Stewart to hold.
That should have been game over, but The Lions took their foot off the gas and once Shaun Cooper had lashed home from close range after 74 minutes, it proved to not be quite such a comfortable stroll for Jackett's teams.
Lee Bradbury let the Lions off the hook 12 minutes from time when he blasted over from eight yards and then Lenny Pidgeley contrived to fumble Brett Pitman's freekick before grabbing the ball at the second attempt as Bournemouth pressed for an equaliser.
Bayo Akinfenwa was introduced to add a bit of a physical presence up front for Millwall, and the big striker certainly made an impact, using his sheer strength and physique to great effect.
Despite an incredible four minutes of injury time (where did that come from?!), The Lions stayed focused to record their third win in four games under new boss Jackett.
