Goals either side of half-time from Andy Booth and Malvin Kamara sent Millwall spinning to only their second home defeat of 2007.
Defeat was a bitter pill to swallow as Willie Donachie's charges battered away at Huddersfield's defence, but simply could not find a way through to secure a deserved share of the spoils.
It had all started so brightly for The Lions, who came flying out of the traps and could have taken the lead as early as the second minute.
Alan Dunne slipped the ball to Neil Harris on the left and he in turn found Danny Spiller. The former Gillingham man twisted and turned before unleashing a rasping drive that keeper Matthew Glennon brilliantly palmed away at full stretch.
Dunne had the ball in the net after 28 minutes, only to see his effort ruled out for offside, Spiller's fierce shot was spilled by Glennon before the danger was cleared and the ever-energetic Danny Senda saw his angled effort flash a yard wide of the post.
Gary Alexander was narrowly off target from Andy Frampton's deep cross as the home side continued to pile forward.
Chris Day did have one save to make - with his feet - but Huddersfield had little to offer going forward and duly fell behind four minutes before the break.
Smith's scintillating skills finally enabled him to feed Senda, who in turn provided an inch perfect cross for skipper Paul Robinson to powerfully head home at the far post.
But the celebrations had barely died down when Huddersfield suddenly found their attacking impetus to grab a shock equaliser. Veteran striker Andy Booth provided the finish - a looping header - after keeper Day was caught off his line.
And within seven minutes of the restart, the visitors had edged ahead when south London lad Kamara powered forward and then somehow found space to poke the ball past Day and into the bottom corner of the net.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession thereafter, The Lions just couldn't make their pressure count.
The introduction of loan signings Jamie O'Hara and Jay Simpson, coupled with Smith switching to the left flank saw Millwall keep huffing and puffing away.
Senda's rasping drive was gathered at the second attempt by Glennon, O'Hara and Frampton both fired over, but The Lions knew it simply wasn't going to be their day when sub Simpson's suprbly struck left-footed volley flew inches wide in the final minute.
Huddersfield, whose time-wasting tactics simply added to the frustration, were happy to run down the four minutes of injury-time to head home happy with the points.
