Willie Donachie's unbeaten run in charge of The Lions came to an end at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday
Millwall had a great chance to take the lead as early as the second minute at a very wet Liberty Stadium when Danny Haynes volleyed powerfully against the crossbar after latching on to a Poul Hubertz flick-on. Five minutes later, Lee Trundle had Swansea's first opportunity of the match, but could only shoot straight at Lenny Pidgley from a tight angle. One chance apiece reflected an evenly-balanced and fast-paced first ten minutes.
Tempers flared when the Swans' Alan Tate was cautioned for a bad tackle on Marvin Elliott, with Tony Craig joining Tate in the book for his reaction. The home side had a great chance to break the deadlock in the 16th minute when Lee Trundle headed against the crossbar, via a deflection. From the resulting corner, Swansea went one better a minute later, with Dennis Lawrence heading home from inside the six-yard box after Pidgelely could only palm the ball away under heavy pressure, which he clearly felt was illegal.
Neither side came close to a chance for the next 17 minutes, until Andy Robinson hit a weak long-range drive which Pidgeley held with ease. Two minutes later, Trundle turned sharply in the box, firing a shot across the face of goal, with Rory Fallon unable to get there to slide it in, the ball going out for a goal kick. Swansea should have doubled their lead shortly after, when three players failed to get a touch on a curling Robinson cross.
The last few minutes of the half saw temperatures rise again, with Haynes becoming the second Millwall man to be cautioned, with players from both teams getting involved in some feisty discussions. Swansea keeper Willy Gueret caused a moment of alarm for his team mates when he came rushing out of his area to head unconvincingly away just before referee Joslin blew for half-time with the Welsh side still a goal to the good.
Mark Phillips replaced Craig at half-time, possibly to avoid any risk of the left-back being dismissed following his first-half caution. Phillips slotted in at centre-back alongside Richard Shaw, with Maurice Ross switching to the left.
Swansea went two-up five minutes after the break, with Leon Britton tapping home at close range from a tight angle after Trundle stole the ball in midfield and fed Fallon, whose cross evaded the Millwall defence.
Willie Donachie then used his two remaining substitutions in a bid to get his team back in the game, with Derek McInnes replacing Samy Mawene in central midfield and Chris Zebroski on for Danny Senda in a more attacking formation.
Millwall keeper Pidgley then made a brilliant save away to his right on 58 minutes to stop his side from going 3-0 down when Darren Pratley headed powefully at goal. Two minutes later, Pidgley repeated his heroics, with a great save to deny Trundle's penalty, after the Swansea striker had been tripped by McInnes. Millwall may have felt that justice was done, as they believed Trundle had fouled Shaw in dispossessing him at the start of his run.
Skipper Elliott then tried to halve his team's deficit with a stinging drive from 30 yards, which former Millwall man Gueret parried before gathering. The Lions pushed forward, with Gueret doing well to punch clear a corner while under strong pressure. Despite their best efforts, Millwall didn't manage another chance until the 80th minute, when Zebroski failed to make strong contact with a shot on the turn inside the box.
With five minutes to go, Zebroski came very close to giving Millwall a lifeline, when his powerful shot from 25 yards was acrobatically pushed behind by Gueret when heading for the top corner. As the fourth official held up the board to indicate there would be three minutes of added time, Chris Hackett curled a free kick high and wide - unfortunately for The Lions and their travelling support, that was their last effort at goal.
