Millwall Study Support Centre boasts 15 computer terminals all connected to the internet and offering a huge range of software. The classroom is very contemporary in design, providing a comfortable learning space. The centre is used by both Lewisham and Southwark education offering classes to local groups and schools.
The Millwall Study Support Centre offers up to 30 students per day in term time, the chance to participate in the UK's most successful education initiative. Classes are split between primary and secondary schools (the latter being offered football/sport by the coaches of the Millwall Community Scheme).
PFS ensures that all children can succeed through the use of a wide variety of high quality curriculum materials, coupled with an informal and relaxed approach to learning. Students are greeted and offered refreshments after their day at school and sessions start with a quiz or game.
Primary students learn to use Microsoft™ Power Point and Publisher, creating badges, Millwall passports and a presentation project as an interactive quiz. The students are given a tour of the club and facilities and get to measure the pitch and gather information on clipboards to complete a photo story for the following week in class.
Secondary students learn how to edit and create digital video. Each student makes a travelogue movie of London using pre-shot clips and adding commentary and introductions that they shoot themselves. Their stadium tour includes an observation test and a maths orienteering course.
"The Study Support Centre is a welcome addition to the Community Scheme and this initiative demonstrates how football can be used to motivate young people to learn. The results speak for them selves." Theo Paphitis
The Centre officially opened on Tuesday 2nd December 2003 by Stephen Twigg, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools.
Over 500 students have been through the programme since the pilot in February 2002.
MSSC obtained QiSS status (Quality in Study Support) as an emerging centre in June 2003.
