Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Millwall Lionesses 2
Having brought the curtain down on their league campaign with a 1-0 win over Gillingham, Millwall Lionesses were in Cup action when they took on Brighton on Tuesday night.
Occupying a higher league position, The Seagulls, on paper at least, were the favourites, and lived up to that tag after 15 minutes when a lightning attack down the left saw them hit the bar from close range.
It served as a warning for the visitors, but any hopes of growing into the game took a knock as the influential Kayleigh Xidhus left the field with an injury tobe replaced by Ciara Sherwood.
Both sides were going all out for the win but it was Millwall who drew first blood. Shaunie Griffiths took aim from 20 yards and found the top left-hand corner giving the Brighton keeper no chance.
Buoyed by the goal, The Lionesses imposed their grit and determination on proceedings, stopping the hosts from finding a way back into the contest.
The Seagulls tried to rally after the break but a long range free-kick sailed harmlessly over Frankie Gibbs' bar. But Brighton levelled soon after, Francesca Ali adjudged to have handled in the area, with Millwall's players in disbelief at the resultant penalty decision. Gibbs could do nothing with the subsequent spot kick, meaning the match was levelled at one apiece.
Gibbs was a spectator once again as another Brighton effort flew wide of the target as the hosts began to build on their momentum. But Millwall upped the ante and, with defensive lynchpins Dionne Lennon and Eve Gilroy in colossal form, were able to gain a foothold in the match and begin to enjoy much more possession going forward.
And their persistence paid off as sub Ashante Odogan collected a through pass and calmly lofted the ball over the advancing Brighton goalkeeper.
It proved enough to seal progression to the next round where The Lionesses will face London rivals West Ham United on Sunday.
The match will at Beckenham Town FC with a 2pm kick-off. Please come along and show your support!
