Johnny Johnson came to Millwall's attention during the war years as a guest whilst serving in the forces. He appeared in 24 games in the Football League South and made a good impression with his speed on the right wing and an excellent shot. His favourite ploy was to come inside the full-back and shoot across the 'keeper to score inside the far post. Millwall often played him at centre-forward when needed, although at 5ft 8in tall, it |
was his pace through the middle that they looked for, not any 'battering- ram' play.

In 1946-47, Johnson was the only Millwall player to reach double figures, with ten goals. He was the victim of some rash tackles and twice nearly had to retire through injuries, back came back both times. In the Summer of 1955, Millwall even transferred him to Tonbridge, thinking his league days were over, but he recovered so well that the Lions re-signed him in November 1955. |
