Alex Jardine

Posted on: Wed 26 Oct 2011

Right Back
Born: Motherwell 22nd September 1928
Debut: Vs Brighton & Hove Albion 4th September 1950

Alex Jardin e was brought from Dundee United for £700, a snip of a price
for a player who turned into one of Millwall's best ever
full- backs. A solid, reliable player with a quick turn of
speed, he was so fast that Millwall used him as an
outside-right in a few games. He had to compete with
Des Quinn for the right back spot during 1950-51, but
began the 1951-52 season in fine form and made that
position his own for the next seven seasons, becoming
a great favourite with the critical Millwall fans. Jardine
missed some matches through injury at the end of 1956-57, and in April
1958 he received the Achilles tendon injury which ended his career.

In a 1950 trial match, he appeared in the line-up as 'Mr X' because Millwall
did not want to alert other League clubs to a player with
such potential. He was signed three days after the trial,
on 15th August 1950. Jardine later proved to be an
effective penalty-taker. He scored six in 1955-56, the
season he played a couple of games at outside-right and scored in eachgame. He represented the Third Division South Vs Third Division North three times and had three
benefit matches. He passed away in Catford, London on 6th June 1978.
