John Gilchrist signed for Millwall from Aidrieonians in
time to play in the last games of the 1960-61 season.
At the time he was contemplating his national service
  at Yeovil. A stocky, hard-tackling right-back, Gilchrist
made that position his own for the next eight seasons.
He also played at centre-half, owing to injuries, and at
centre-forward to add punch to the attack. Against
Bradford in a tense promotion game at the end of
1964-65, he scored the winner and played a major
role in Millwall's rise from Fourth Division to Second Division in successive
 seasons.

After overcoming a knee injury sustained against Bristol Rovers in March

Transferred to Fulham in July 1969, he made 20
league appearances (one goal) before moving to
Colchester Utd in July 1970. There he played 41
Fourth Division games, scored two goals and was
a member of the side that enjoyed a fine F.A Cup
run in 1970-71. He had a benefit game at
Colchester, against Millwall on 5th May 1978.
Gilchrist also played for Tooting and Mitcham and for Tonbridge as player-
 manager. John died in 1991.
